Tanama Colibri
Tanama is an Afro-Taina singer and songwriter, an emotive, exuberant and exciting performer, born in the vibrant barrio of New York City’s Washington Heights to Dominican and Puerto Rican parents . Tanama grew up singing and dancing to the seductive sounds of the Caribbean experienced at unforgettable family parties where the rhythm of her people enveloped her and brought everyone to life. This ignited her desire to perform. At age five Tanama sang her first solo at her Kindergarten graduation, and she continued exploring her artistic and musical passions into her teens.
In her early twenties Tanama realized that music was her heart and soul and should be her focus in life. Tanama gave up her secure job and her legal safety to embark on what would ultimately be an 8 year journey that took her from Mexico through Latin America, to the Virgin islands, then to Paris, and most recently, back to Hawaii. Along this magical journey, she learned to play a variety of instruments, developed a kinship with artists and artisans, absorbed the folklore of differing cultures, became fluent in 4 languages and matured musically.
As a guitarist who accompanies herself, a lead singer for a well-known musical group, a songwriter and solo performer at parties, events, and festivals, Tanama has a varied repertoire that ranges from soul to jazz, hip hop, spoken word and world music ,including the customized, personal songs of love she writes songs for engagements and weddings. She has written the official song for the 501©3 organization, What Makes You Feel Beautiful.
Currently living on the garden isle of Maui, but ready to travel the world again at a moment’s notice to perform at events or festivals, Tanama has drawn on the musical culture that is in her DNA and on her immersive global experiences to create her debut album, to be released soon.
