MUSIC DIRECTED BY: Josh Pelletier
STAGE MANAGED BY: Courtney Pritt
PRODUCED BY:
ProArts Playhouse

SHOW SYNOPSIS: Fresh off its hit Broadway premiere, Gutenberg! The Musical! is a clever, offbeat, frequently absurd comedy that affectionately spoofs the world of musical theater. This love letter to new works is told through the lens of two aspiring writers earnestly pitching their wildly inaccurate musical about the invention of the printing press, blending infectious enthusiasm, witty songs, and irreverent historical twists.

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new, ill-advised project-a big splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their historical-fictionalized epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them that elusive Broadway contract.

Please thoroughly review the information below as well as our general show and audition policies HERE on this page. • The Director will have you do a cold-read from sides from the play with a reader. Sides will be provided at the audition.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

The director is seeking actors ages 18 and up. Seeking actors of all ethnicities and gender identities, but characters must be played as male-identifying. All character ages are stage-ages and are flexible within reason:

  • Bud Davenport-30’s. He’s is eager to please, and thrives on approval. When Bud sings one of his songs, he’s reveling in his own “brilliance.” But he’s too naive to be an egomaniac; if anything, he overly grateful for the mere opportunity to create and perform. Bud enjoys getting caught up in Doug’s passion and admirers his friend’s Big Ideas. (high baritone/tenor)
  • Doug Simon-30’s. An innocent. He’s a naive, utterly sincere and earnest man who never met a cause he wasn’t passionate about. He’s a jack of all trades, master of none, who compensates with an infectious, matter-of-fact energy and focus that would probably sound condescending if he weren’t so likable. He’s incredibly proud of the show he wrote with Bud, and thinks Bud, whom he adores, is a genius. (high baritone/tenor)

Rehearsals

ABOUT REHEARSALS

This Season we will be rehearsing shows for longer periods of time but with fewer rehearsals per week. We’ve found that this makes doing shows accessible for more people and allows people the time they need to work on lines at home.

FIRST READ-THROUGH

TBD

REHEARSAL COMMITMENT

Because this show has only 2 actors, we want to provide plenty of time with the material. The early weeks will focus almost exclusively on music with only a couple of rehearsals per week.

  • Once things pick up, we rehearse a max of 5 times per week. We’ve found that this makes doing shows accessible for more people and allows people the time they need to work on lines at home.
  • The final schedule will be determined based on people’s availability.
  • Please note that during tech week, rehearsal hours are longer.
  • The final rehearsal of tech week on Thursday, January 29th will be a “preview” performance with a small invited audience. This audience will be instructed that “holds” and tech fixes may still occur during this performance.
  • Possible (but unlikely) pick-up rehearsals to be scheduled during show weeks, depending on the schedule of the actors & need for pick ups.
LIKELY REHEARSAL TIMES

NOTE:  Please remember that, as stated above, this does NOT mean that rehearsals will take place every day of these potential days! These are simply our options, and the schedule may vary from week to week.

  • Potential rehearsal times: Sunday through Thursday Evenings ideally 6–9pm or 6:30-9:30pm and Saturdays from either 10am to 2pm or 11am to 3pm.
  • Day rehearsals are possible if that better suits the actors’ schedules.
  • Cue to cue will take place on the Saturday before the show opens and will be anywhere from 4 to 7 hours long during the day, depending on our needs; food will be provided. PLEASE BE SURE OF YOUR AVAILABILITY FOR THIS DAY.
  • Tech rehearsals will be longer, but will never go past 11pm
