The Art of Preparation: A Meisner Workshop
Sunday, September 13, 2026
Starts at 5:00pm
About the Workshop
Presented in Partnership by ProArts Playhouse and Maui Meisner Studio
Preparation is one of the most powerful, and most misunderstood, tools in an actor’s craft. While many performers focus on memorization, blocking, or emotional results, true preparation creates the inner life that allows authentic, spontaneous performances to emerge.
In this immersive, hands-on workshop, actors will explore the Meisner Technique’s approach to preparation through a practical, step-by-step process designed to help them arrive at a scene emotionally available, deeply connected, and ready to respond truthfully in the moment. Rather than manufacturing emotion, participants will learn how to cultivate an inner circumstance that supports genuine, lived behavior under imaginary circumstances.
This is an active working class. Participants are asked to bring one fully memorized monologue or scene to work on throughout the workshop. Through personalized coaching, actors will apply preparation techniques directly to their own material, experiencing how preparation can transform a performance without making it feel planned or performed.
For those interested in strengthening their audition skills, cold reading opportunities will also be incorporated, allowing actors to explore how preparation can be applied even when working with unfamiliar material.
Topics include:
– What preparation is, and what it isn’t
– Creating truthful emotional readiness
– Building rich inner circumstances without forcing emotion
– Applying preparation to memorized scenes and monologues
– Remaining spontaneous while fully prepared
– Bringing preparation into auditions, rehearsals, and performances
– Balancing inner preparation with moment-to-moment listening
Ideal for actors of all experience levels, this workshop is designed for anyone looking to deepen their emotional accessibility, strengthen their instincts, and bring greater truth, freedom, and confidence to their work.
Participants should come prepared with one fully memorized monologue or scene to receive individualized coaching and apply the techniques throughout the workshop.
