Reading of Victoria Kneubuhl’s Ke Kauā o Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Piʻikoi

A Pono Project Event

Sunday, April 26, 2026
Starts at 2:00pm
Run time: 90 minutes with no intermission

Featuring Kepa Cabanilla-Aricayos, Francis Tau’a, Hōkū Pavao, Kameron Lum, Ricky Jones, Lehua Bissen, and Brock Kaho’ohanohano-Ambrose.

Join us for a reading of compelling theatrical production exploring the life of the “Prince of the People”. The play highlights Kūhiō’s role in Hawaiian history, from his childhood and imprisonment in 1895 to his influential work in the U.S. Congress and the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. The play debuted at ʻIolani Palace in the fall of 2022. Kūhiō was a challenging and controversial leader. This play’s intent is to bring some of his moʻolelo to life in order to help audiences today in grappling with some of the tough issues faced around leadership and civics in their personal lives and in Hawaiʻi’s complex community.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Playwright and novelist Victoria Kneubuhl has used her writing as a way to share the history of Hawaiʻi. Her plays have been performed in Hawai`i and the continental United States and have toured to Britain, Asia, and the Pacific. An anthology of her work, Hawai’i Nei: Island Plays, is available from the University of Hawai’i Press.
While writing is her passion, she also sees it as a way to give something back. “One of the things that I really want people to know…who are from the islands or the Pacific, is that our stories are so worth telling. If you write something that is heartfelt and genuine, you are leaving a gift for your community,” says Kneubuhl.
