About the Show
Come enjoy a beautiful afternoon of music and learn what the songs mean to the artist through his songs, as well as a Talk Story session with our host.
Stephen Henderson is a native Hawaiian and tongan island soul singer/songwriter and producer whose roots stem from Hana, Maui. Stephen writes through personal experiences close to home and to the heart. His songs are markers of his life – and are about the experiences and relationships most core to his existence – family, love, loss, death and everything in between. His intricate guitar work, genre-bending antics, soul-soaked vocal tone and insane range embody softness and warmth and breathe rich nuance and atmosphere into everything he touches.
As a recording artist and songwriter, Stephen released his debut album “Outside Looking In” in 2016. Since then he’s released numerous singles which air on pacific island radio and was nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano awards for back to back years in 2023 and 2024. Stephen released his sophomore album “Hey Child” to critical acclaim under the “Island Soul” genre – a heartfelt mixture of pocket soul, bluegrass, indie-folk, RnB, and island contemporary. The flagship song “Hey Child” was a winner in the most recent 2024 Hawaii Songwriters Festival song contest. He was also the winner of the 2024 Mana Maoli Song Contest with his entry “Babylon” in collaboration with his sister Pohai.
As a producer Stephen produced Leilani Wolfgramm’s “Live-wire” acoustic album in 2020. He has also produced multiple Island Soul singles with a growing list of up-and-coming artists including Drew Daniels, Pohai, Keoni Thompson and cubworld. Outside of the Island Soul genre – Stephen co-produces melancholy electronica music with his collaborators Jenny Yim and Graham Barton under the moniker “Serpens” and upbeat ethereal hyper-pop bangers with his collaborator Braden Anderson under the moniker “AZHES”.
Stephen was awarded the Carolyn Applebaum Prize for Music for excellence in service to the musical community and entrepreneurial endeavors from the Stanford University Department of Music in 2012 where he graduated with a BA and MA in Music, Science and Technology. He is an alumni of the Creative Media Lab Hawaii and his music can be licensed through Marmoset Music.
During the day Stephen is a Director of Software Product at Cricut, Inc. where he helps people live more creative lives. He also runs a small boutique media and event company, Ohana Productions, where he produces and runs an intimate digital venue called “Ohana Sessions”. He resides in Hilo, HI where he and his beautiful wife raise their two young children in the Hawaiian Immersion school system.
