CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Please note that the gender descriptions apply to the characters, not the actors:
Seymour (Lead) – Male-identifying. 25-40
Shy, a bit clumsy, unsure of himself but does right by his people. Meek. He started life as an orphan on Skid Row, but was taken in by his current boss Mr. Mushnik. Taking care of plants and learning about them are his joy. He is likable and well-meaning, but his naïveté often gets him into sticky situations. Strong actor and singer.
Vocal range top: G4 – Vocal range bottom: A2
Audrey (Lead)– Female-identifying. 25-40
Kind-hearted, a dreamer. She is stylish and genuine.. She has a warped sense of self worth from a painful past, but it does not define her. A life lived in Skid Row has not tarnished her ability to dream a way out of a desperate circumstance. Strong acting and singing; comedic timing skills a plus.
Vocal range: bit of belt Vocal range top: D5 – Vocal range bottom: G#3
Mr. Mushnik (Supporting) – Male-identifying. 45-65
A struggling flower shop owner with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Nosy, father figure to Seymour. Brutally honest and hard on his employees. Profit-driven. Beneath his rough exterior is a man just trying to survive and who truly cares about Seymour and Audrey. Strong character actor with some singing.
Vocal range top: F4 – Vocal range bottom: G2
Orin Scrivello (Supporting) Male-identifying, 30-40
Audrey’s Dentist boyfriend. He is arrogant, self-satisfied and abusive. Charismatic and can light up a room with his toxic charm. Constantly asserting his masculinity and abusing power in attempts to hide his own vulnerability. His sickness lies in deriving pleasure in causing things pain and in abusing nitrous oxide. Strong character actor and singer who can also deliver a bit of a comic edge. Ability to play other minor roles such as Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip and more. **Please note other minor roles may be covered by another actor.
Vocal range top: G4 – Vocal range bottom: G2
The Plant (Audrey II) Any gender, 18+
Non-speaking puppeteers (experience not required) who manipulate various stages of the plant as it gets bigger. Strong physical acting skills and the ability to portray character and emotion purely through movement. Has stamina to operate the large, heavy final puppet. We’re planning to cast TWO actors and split the puppeting duties, with each puppeteer covering the other in case of absence.
Voice of the Plant (Audrey II) Any gender, any age
Actor/vocalist located offstage. Larger than life, their voice carries wondrous weight and presence. Foul-mouthed. Smooth, Sweet-talking and street smart. They ooze the rhythm and blues. The Plant is very persuasive and excels at getting what it wants. Strong character actor and singer. Has excellent funky R&B vocal chops.
Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon aka The Street Urchins (3 roles) Female-identifying , 18-30
Street-styled girl group with infectious energy and confidence. They are the light and soul of Skid Row who can sing well and know it. They are the no-nonsense driving force of the story; essentially a funky Greek chorus who comment on the action and have the strongest grip on reality. Strong harmony singers with excellent movement skills that can synchronize well within a group.
Vocal range top: F5 – Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Rehearsals
ABOUT REHEARSALS
This Season we will be rehearsing shows for longer periods of time but with fewer rehearsals per week. We’ve found that this makes doing shows accessible for more people and allows people the time they need to work on lines at home.
FIRST READ-THROUGH
Sunday, January 19th from 5pm – 9pm
REHEARSAL COMMITMENT
For this show, we will have approximately 25 rehearsals spread over 7 weeks. Most weeks we will rehearse 3-5 times a week, particularly during the holidays. The final schedule will be determined based on people’s availability, so the schedule below is approximate.
- January 8th through January 30th:
- Music/Choreo/Puppet Rehearsals, as applicable. Please be aware that many music rehearsals will be one-on-one.

Rehearsals will generally go from 6pm – 9pm - March 7th through 13th: Tech Week
*Please note that during tech week, rehearsal hours are longer
March 13th: Preview performance for small invited-only audience
Possible (but unlikely) pick-up rehearsals are to be scheduled during show weeks, depending on the schedule of the actors & need for pick-ups.
LIKELY REHEARSAL TIMES
NOTE: Please remember that, as stated above, this does not mean that rehearsals will take place every day of these potential days! These are simply our options! And the schedule may vary from week to week.
Potential rehearsal times: Sunday through Friday Evenings ideally 6pm – 9pm if at Maui OffStage and 6:30 – 9:30pm when at ProArts and Saturdays from either 10am – 2pm or 11am – 3pm; some Sunday day rehearsals may be scheduled.
Cue to cue will take place on the Saturday before the show opens and will be anywhere from 4 to 7 hours long during the day, depending on our needs.
