Hawai‘i’s first Olympic gold medalist and the father of modern surfing\, Duke Kahanamoku is unquestionably one of the most important and beloved figures in Hawaiian history. Duke lived through Hawaiʻi’s transition from an independent Nation to a U.S territory and on to statehood. In many ways his extraordinary life served as a guiding light for Hawaiʻi’s people in their struggle to find identity in a changing world. Known for his humility\, kindness and love of community Duke’s fame and renown made him a role model and source of inspiration for all.\nDuke premiered in October 2015 at Honolulu Theatre for Youth\, where it ran for five weeks with more than 10\,000 people attending the show. The play’s development coincided with the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum’s landmark exhibition commemorating the 125th anniversary of Duke’s birth. SUMMARY:The Art of Preparation: A Meisner Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Preparation: A Meisner Workshop\n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\nStarts at 5:00pm\n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Workshop\nPresented in Partnership by ProArts Playhouse and Maui Meisner Studio\nPreparation is one of the most powerful\, and most misunderstood\, tools in an actor’s craft. While many performers focus on memorization\, blocking\, or emotional results\, true preparation creates the inner life that allows authentic\, spontaneous performances to emerge.\nIn this immersive\, hands-on workshop\, actors will explore the Meisner Technique’s approach to preparation through a practical\, step-by-step process designed to help them arrive at a scene emotionally available\, deeply connected\, and ready to respond truthfully in the moment. Rather than manufacturing emotion\, participants will learn how to cultivate an inner circumstance that supports genuine\, lived behavior under imaginary circumstances.\nThis is an active working class. Participants are asked to bring one fully memorized monologue or scene to work on throughout the workshop. Through personalized coaching\, actors will apply preparation techniques directly to their own material\, experiencing how preparation can transform a performance without making it feel planned or performed.\nFor those interested in strengthening their audition skills\, cold reading opportunities will also be incorporated\, allowing actors to explore how preparation can be applied even when working with unfamiliar material.\nTopics include:\n– What preparation is\, and what it isn’t\n– Creating truthful emotional readiness\n– Building rich inner circumstances without forcing emotion\n– Applying preparation to memorized scenes and monologues\n– Remaining spontaneous while fully prepared\n– Bringing preparation into auditions\, rehearsals\, and performances\n– Balancing inner preparation with moment-to-moment listening\nIdeal for actors of all experience levels\, this workshop is designed for anyone looking to deepen their emotional accessibility\, strengthen their instincts\, and bring greater truth\, freedom\, and confidence to their work.\nParticipants should come prepared with one fully memorized monologue or scene to receive individualized coaching and apply the techniques throughout the workshop.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ticket Information\nPay what you can\n($50 Suggested)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Search eventsSearch\n \n BACK TO UPCOMING
