SUMMARY:A Celebration of AAPI Heritage Month featuring DeShannon Higa: A Pono Project Event
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of AAPI Heritage Month featuring DeShannon Higa\nA Pono Project Event\n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, May 16\, 2026Starts at 7:30pmRun time: 90 minutes with no intermission\n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Show\nPresented by ProArts Playhouse and Jazz Maui\nFeaturing Jeff Hellmer on piano\, Dave Graber on bass\, and Howie Rentzer on drums\nHeritage in MotionTraditionTransformed\nHeritage in Motion is a 90-minute musical journey that explores identity as something living—shaped by roots\, refined through experience\, and expressed in sound.\nThe show opens grounded in groove\, drawing the audience in with familiar rhythmic language and warmth. From there\, the music begins to stretch—blending jazz\, soul\, funk\, and subtle cultural textures that reflect the layered experience of Asian American and Pacific Islander identity. Rather than presenting tradition as something static\, each piece reimagines it—transformed through improvisation\, arrangement\, and collective voice.\nMidway through\, the energy gives way to space and reflection—a more intimate moment that highlights lyricism\, tone\, and emotional depth. Here\, the idea of “heritage” becomes personal\, not just cultural.\nThe final arc builds with increasing momentum—tight ensemble playing\, rhythmic drive\, and expressive solos—culminating in a powerful\, unified sound that feels both rooted and forward-moving.\nHeritage in Motion is not just a performance—it’s a statement:that culture is not preserved in place\, but carried forward\, reshaped\, and made alive through every note.\nSpecial low pricing made possible through the Pono Project.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artist\nDeShannon Higa is a renown jazz trumpet player both in Hawai‘i and New York City. His professional experience spans over 20 years and has performed in famous venues such as Birdland\, Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, and Radio City Music Hall. He has also recorded on many albums including Raiatea Helm\, Hula Joe & the Hutjumpers (received a Hoku award for best jazz album) and Fiji. His credits include such notable artists as Burt Bacharach\, Joe Williams\, Gladys Knight\, Keali‘i Reichel\, Wayne Newton\, Diana Krall\, Donny & Marie Osmond\, Al Jarreau\, Jake Shimabukuro\, The Temptations\, The Elvis Presley Band\, Dionne Warwick\, Matt Catingub\, Tower of Power\, and Wynton Marsalis\, among many others.\nDeShannon’s styles of music range from jazz to latin/salsa to modern electronica and hip hop. As a bandleader/visionary\, he has assembled and is currently performing with two bands of his own creation: gr00ve.imProV.arTiSts (an urban jazz-electronica dance band) and Quadpod (a neo-bop quartet). An anthology of her work\, Hawai’i Nei: Island Plays\, is available from the University of Hawai’i Press.\nWhile writing is her passion\, she also sees it as a way to give something back. “One of the things that I really want people to know…who are from the islands or the Pacific\, is that our stories are so worth telling. Environmental Communications (EC) was a pioneering collective of artists\, architects\, and thinkers active from 1969 to 1980\, dedicated to reimagining the relationship between art\, architecture\, and the environment. Through experimental publications\, photography\, and performances\, EC helped awaken a new environmental awareness. Gary Greenberg\, former President of EC\, will present the group’s groundbreaking work and legacy. The creative spirit of the 1970s continues to inspire architects\, artists\, and cultural historians today.\nABOUT: Revival69 The Concert that Rocked the World\nExplore the remarkable\, behind-the-scenes story of how an all-star music festival came together against all odds in 1969. Called “the second most important event in rock n’ roll history\,” the concert united legends Chuck Berry\, Little Richard\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Bo Diddley\, Gene Vincent with The Doors\, and John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ticket Information\nPremium Seating:\n$21.20 Premium (large cushy front-row chairs with small tables)\nPreferred Seating:\n$16 Preferred (front row of any seating tier)\nRegular Seating:\n$13\nPartially-Obstructed View Seats:\n$11\nFor information on our Access for All initiative\, click HERE\n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BACK TO UPCOMING

Grounded in cutting-edge science and woven with the wisdom of Hawaiian culture\, the story unfolds through the guiding principles of E Ola (live and thrive)\, Aloha ʻĀina (love and respect for the land)\, Mālama (to care for)\, and Kuleana (responsibility). By blending evolutionary biology with Native Hawaiian values\, this talk offers a powerful reflection on our shared origins and the sacred duty to care for the Earth and each other.\nDr. Tom Vendetti will be screening\, “Dalai Lama Scientist”\, An uplifting and optimistic documentary about the Dalai Lama’s meetings with scientists from around the world to find commonalities among Buddhist science and western science to promote health\, understanding and compassion for all\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ticket Information\nPremium Seating:\n$21.20 Premium (large cushy front-row chairs with small tables)\nPreferred Seating:\n$16 Preferred (front row of any seating tier)\nRegular Seating:\n$13\nPartially-Obstructed View Seats:\n$11\nFor information on our Access for All initiative\, click HERE\n \n BUY TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BACK TO UPCOMING
